I’m fairly certain no-one reads this site - there’s already plenty of aggregate sources for music industry news, gear reviews etc., yet I’ve not entirely given up (despite the lack of posts in past weeks).

One cool update is my Solo Piano CD project has now been used to support a number of unique organizations - it’s incredibly rewarding to see it having impact! So with things happening on that front in Canada and Africa, it’s time to seek outlets here in New Zealand and Australia.

First weekend of using Ableton Live at Mosaic - used a 4in/4out interface to connect a clean mix to the house, and a separate click track to the drummer. I’m now thinking less and less as a keyboard player, and more as a producer… fun times.

Stumbled upon Renoise today - a multi-platform tracker music application. I’ve tried to block the frustration of ScreamTracker and FastTracker 2 out of my mind (they led the field in the 90’s before Ableton Live redefined the game), but if you’re looking for a different way to view sample-based production and composition, it’s worth a look. (Demo Available / Full Version is ~$75)

Prolific year for Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails - first, his conceptual album Ghosts, and its accompanying film festival, and then this week, a free-for-download full-length album The Slip. Especially cool is the option to download the multi-track sessions in full - amazing! One last thing (and beautiful attention to detail), unlike Radiohead’s sub-par quality online release of In Rainbows, you get your chance of choosing the quality of your download - up to and including Apple Lossless / FLAC. All this, and the pre-sale for tour tickets was just announced.

Once again shipping a box of my CD to New Zealand… The first attempt resulted in 120 lost albums, and an (ongoing) attempt to recover my loses from the Canadian shipping firm. Hopefully this time things run smoother (knock on wood).

I’m slightly OCD about my iTunes organization. You can imagine my frustration when a simple Apple Script I used corrupted my iTunes Library, erasing all ratings, play-counts, and playlists. This metadata provided a list of (for example) top-rated selections that have been left unheard for more than 3 months excluding Christmas songs - nothing too complicated, but great for road trips!

… So begins the process of rebuilding it all.
